Many activities are available around Guayabo Lodge. Whether you enjoy walking in nature, exploring ancient civilizations, tasting new flavors, seeking thrills, or swimming by a waterfall, there’s something for everyone!
Turrialba Volcano and surroundings
From your room or the garden you will be able to see the active Turrialba Volcano as well as the Turrialba valley and the Talamanca Mountain Range. The lodge has a strategic view of the surrounding mountains. The Chirripo Mountain, Costa Rica’s highest peak, the Cerro de la Muerte and the Turrialba volcano are three of the four highest mountains can all be seen from the lodge. Also, on clear days you can perceive the reflection of the Atlantic ocean, from where the sun rises.
The Turrialba Volcano is active. Discover this beautiful place, see how the vegetation was burned by the last eruption en 2016 and by acid rain. You will be able to enjoy the impressive Bosque Quemado del Silencio, the lava flows, rivers of minerals, and incredible calm that you won’t be able to find anywhere else.
Tour del Bosque Quemado (Hacienda La Central) During these 5 kilometers walk accessible to all and accompanied by a guide, you can discover the volcano, its history, and its beautiful landscapes.

Guayabo Nacional Monument
Guayabo National Monument is the most significant precolumbian site in Costa Rica, preserving important ancient structures.
It was established to protect the archaeological remains, as well as the surrounding flora, fauna, and water resources. The site extends over an area of approximately 20 hectares. Research has revealed that it was occupied from 1000 BC to 1400 AD by an indigenous group, whose economy was based on agriculture, hunting and fishing.
It’s located 30min from the lodge.

These tours usually need to be booked in advance.
Surrounding farms invite you to discover their production through guided tours. Participate in every day Rural Life. At the end of the tour, you can taste the product you’ve just discovered.

Rafting on the Pacuare River or the Pejiballe River
The Turrialba Valley is home to the famous Pacuare River, regarded as one of the top ten rivers in the world for white water rafting. The Pacuare river provides class III and IV rapids and during your trip you will enjoy breathtaking sceneries of rainforest, waterfalls and wildlife such as sloths, monkeys and many different bird species. People from all over the world travel to Turrialba just to experience the rapids of this unique river.
Although no previous experience is necessary for white water rafting on the Pacuare, you might prefer a less wild (rapids class II and III) but also very scenic trip on the Pejiballe River.

Cataratas Las Trillizas
The Turrialba area offers many waterfalls due to its high rainfall and very irregular topography. The Aquiares river, the Turrialba river and the Guayabo river originate high up near the top of the Turrialba volcano. These rivers all have more than one waterfall.
Guayabo Lodge is close to several beautiful waterfalls.
Las cataratas Las trillizas is located 30min from the lodge, on the Guayabo river With its three waterfalls, you’ll enjoy a refreshing break.

Canyoning Adventure
The “canyoning” in Turrialba which also includes zip lining and rappelling, is unique in the country.
This popular, adrenaline-packed adventure lasts 3 to 4 hours and involves rappelling down trees, descending cliffs and waterfalls, and zip lining through the treetops. Rated as the best canyoning experience in Costa Rica, the site also features a thrilling walk across a 132-foot (40m) hanging bridge.

Irazu Volcano
The Irazú Volcano rises at 3,432 meters or 11,260 feet above sea level and is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica. However, it displays little activity since its last major eruption in 1963. It is located northeast of the town of Cartago, in the Central Volcanic Cordillera.
Besides its impressive craters, the views to the Atlantic and the Pacific are spectacular. And with luck, you see the smoking Turrialba volcano at close range.
From the Guayabo Lodge it is at a distance of 1 h 30.

Horseback Riding
All horseback riding tours take you through diverse landscapes with panoramic views. Two of the main routes include: the scenic surroundings of the Turrialba Valley, known for its crops and lush natural beauty; and the more tropical, hilly area of Atirro, famous for its coffee and sugarcane fields. Both tours come highly recommended.

CATIE Botanical Collections
The Tropical Agricultural Center for Research and Higher Education (CATIE) is a leading regional institution for research and higher education in agriculture, agroforestry, and natural resource management. CATIE has been a source of key innovations for national and regional programs, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, including agroforestry, environmental service valuation, and participative research.
Its scientific botanical collections feature tropical fruit trees, useful plants, and crops, primarily from the American Tropics, along with beautiful tropical flowers and exotic species.
The tour can be enjoyed in the morning or afternoon and can be complemented with a visit to the campus and lake area, where you can observe various resident and migratory bird species.

Lankester Botanical Gardens
If you are an orchid lover, a visit to the Lankester Botanical Gardens is a must. The gardens house a world-class collection of orchids, many of which are native to Costa Rica, forming a scientific collection managed by the University of Costa Rica.
The mission of the Lankester Botanical Gardens is to promote the conservation of Costa Rica’s tropical epiphytic flora, particularly orchids, through research, education, and horticultural programs.

Orosi Valley
For lovers of scenic beauty, the Orosi Valley and Turrialba Valley are among the most picturesque valleys in Costa Rica.
In the Orosi Valley, you can explore the ruins of the Ujarras Church, the oldest standing church ruins in the country. You can also visit “La Casa del Soñador,” a rustic spot where local woodcarvers create beautiful pieces from coffee wood. Additionally, enjoy trout fishing (if desired) and take in various panoramic views throughout the valley.

Mountain Biking and Hiking
Biking through the CATIE Collections : The trails’ topography can be adapted to any level of cyclist. Your guide will share insights into the diverse forests and fruit plantations, which may include coffee, cocoa, sugarcane, bananas, and macadamia nuts. Thanks to the variety of flowers and fruits, the plantations are also ideal for observing birds, mammals, and some reptiles.
Hiking in the Rural area of Santa Cruz (Turrialba Volcano)
This option allows you to create your own route in the expansive area surrounding the hotel. The trails can again be tailored to any skill level. You can explore the Guayabo National Monument, the Aquiares coffee plantation, or the rural areas on the volcano.
